(1) No person shall willfully disturb, remove, deface or damage any sign erected or maintained under the provisions of this chapter.

(2) Any person violating this chapter shall forfeit not more than $200 or, in default of payment, be confined to the county jail for not more than 6 months, or until such forfeiture is paid and in addition to penalties imposed by statutes.

(3) Any person who accidentally causes any of the damage described in sub. (1) shall immediately report the same to the county sheriff’s office or the county highway department.

(4) Willful failure to so report such damage shall be a violation of this chapter and such person shall be subject to a forfeiture of not more than $100, or in default of payment, be confined to the county jail for not more than 30 days or until such forfeiture is paid.
